Antique Caucasian Runner with Radiating Rosette Field
A wool-on-wool village weaving with saturated color, crisp geometry, and a beautifully rhythmic allover design.
This antique Caucasian runner has a striking allover field of radiating rosettes, each drawn with angular, sunburst-like arms and small petal or leaf forms that give the pattern both movement and symmetry.
Set against a deep aubergine-indigo ground, these motifs repeat in offset rows and glow in shades of persimmon, coral, soft ivory, celadon, sage, and pale pink. The borders are equally lively, with a broad ivory main border of stepped geometric flowerhead-like shapes and hooked forms, framed by narrow guards in vivid orange-red and small rosette devices.
The palette feels unmistakably Caucasian: saturated, playful, and sharply outlined, with that wonderful contrast between dark ground and bright mineral-like accents.
Woven in wool pile on a wool foundation around the turn of the 20th century, it has the honest surface and age-softened character you hope to see in an old village rug.
At 4 by 9 feet, it works beautifully in a hallway, entry passage, kitchen, or along a bed where its long format and animated pattern can really come to life. If you are drawn to antique rugs with crisp tribal geometry, old-world color, and a surface that shows its history gracefully, this is a very compelling piece.
